The Homestead is a 54-unit independent living rental retirement community owned by the City of Alva. The Homestead was conceived out of a love and commitment to enhancing the lives of older citizens.

Independent living is for the active senior adult who enjoys social interaction and freedom from home maintenance and life's little hassles. An independent living retirement community offers a safe, carefree, and unique residential alternative to living at home.

Why does the City want to own The Homestead?

City ownership coincides with the City's mission to care for those who have been a part of the heritage of Alva.

Who manages he Homestead?

The City of Alva owns, manages, and financially backs The Homestead. Revenue bonds insure stability and allow families to choose quality living for our senior adults. Northwestern Oklahoma State University, Northwest Technology Center, and community organizations provide many local activities for the active senior adult to enjoy. The Homestead is committed to keeping residents involved in the community through participating in intergenerational programs with all ages and volunteering in schools, churches and civic organizations. Alva is a community which is dedicated to supporting retired citizens in a manner which is professional, stimulating and nurturing.

Is The Homestead a nursing home or assisted living facility?

No. The Homestead caters to the residential needs of active, independent senior adults. Licensed home health agencies are used to address short term rehabilitation and health care needs. Private caregivers may be contracted to oversee activities of daily living. No medical services are provided by The Homestead. This combination allows residents to maintain the freedom, independence, well-being, and dignity they deserve.
